SEYMOUR, Ind. – The Seymour Police Department responded to the 100 block of E. 9th Street in Seymour on Saturday after a report of a one-month-old child choking and not breathing. Upon arrival, it was determined that the baby was gurgling, and facial color was changing.
Officer Dakota Burke and other SPD officers utilized the LifeVac system, an upper airway clearing device, to assist in clearing the young child’s airway. Once the baby began to respond, police transported the child to Schneck Medical Center.
SPD began using the LifeVac system on July 26. All officers in the department will be issued the LifeVac system after they complete the required training.
The LifeVac rescue suction device has been vetted, purchased, and implemented in over 460 Fire Departments/EMS providers, and over 540 police departments. There are 59 documented post-market reports of lives saved by first responders, including the one on Saturday by the Seymour Police Department.
