BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. – The body of Richard Chaille, 70, of Columbus, was located and recovered at 5 a.m. Thursday morning by local fire department personnel. Indiana Conservation Officers began searching for Chaille on Wednesday.
At approximately 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday, responders were notified the man was in the water near his boat when he went under and did not resurface. The man was not wearing a lifejacket at the time of the incident.
The search was halted due to darkness on Wednesday evening and Chaille was found just before sunrise the following morning. An exact cause of death is pending autopsy results.
The lake reopened for normal use at 10 a.m. on Thursday.
Conservation Officers were assisted by the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department, Southwest Volunteer Fire Department, Harrison Township Volunteer Fire Department, Columbus Township Fire Department, and Columbus Regional Heath.
