NORTH VERNON, Ind. — The North Vernon City Council convened on Monday, July 22.
Mayor Shawn Gerkin informed the council that Fire Chief Mike Cole is researching and writing a job description for a code enforcement officer. The position would be under the umbrella of the fire department and the office would also be located there. The fire department is required to do annual inspections of all commercial buildings. The officer would be taking on that responsibility as well as helping the city’s street department and the police department enforce city ordinances.
Gerkin made sure to note that this position is not to replace the county inspector. Area Planning will still be in charge of county inspections. The city’s code enforcement officer is strictly for city use. The salary would be paid out of the ETC and the code enforcement budget lines.
A motion was not needed, as Gerkin asked for the council’s blessing to move forward with the process of creating a job description. Once that is completed, it will then be presented to board at a later date. The council agreed.
