NASHVILLE, Ind. – Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractor Ragle, Inc. began work at the intersection of State Road 135 and Main Street in May to complete an intersection modernization and improvement project in Nashville.
The current traditional intersection will become an exclusive pedestrian phase intersection. An exclusive pedestrian phase intersection is a type of traffic signal movement that temporarily stops all vehicular traffic, allowing all pedestrians to cross in any direction.
These types of intersections are installed to ensure that people crossing the street can do so without any vehicle movement through the intersection.
Recent studies show a decrease in pedestrian/vehicular crashes where exclusive pedestrian phase intersections were installed. Effectively, they eliminate potential conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles and enhance safety and mobility through the intersection.
INDOT says the exclusive Brown County pedestrian phase intersection is expected to begin operating later this month, weather permitting.
