GREENWOOD, Ind. – A tornado touched down Sunday in northern Johnson County. The tornado damaged several neighborhoods, homes and businesses. The damage downed power lines, leaving much of the area without power. So far only minor injuries have been reported, officials said in a press conference Sunday night.
Bargersville Fire Department Chief Eric Funkhouser said 75 homes received moderate to severe damage. Residents in the Bargersville and Center Grove areas are asked to plan for electrical outages lasting from one to five days in some areas, per the Bargersville Fire Department.
Dramatic video showed the funnel cloud as it moved in Greenwood near Stones Crossing. Johnson County Sheriff Duane Burgess asked the public to avoid the area so emergency personnel could respond.
Two national weather service teams arrived Monday morning to begin to assess the situation. Thousands have slowly begun to regain power after the tornado traveled a 3-mile-long path whipping up debris.
The following roads were temporarily closed to allow space for first responders:
- Travis Road between Mullinix Road to Morgantown Road
- Morgantown Road from Mullinix Road to Whiteland Road
- Stones Crossing Road from State Road 135 to Saddle Club Road
- Saddle Club Road from Stones Crossing Road to Smokey Row Road
The American Red Cross has opened a shelter at Greenwood Middle School.
A separate tornado in Martin County killed at least one.
