FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office said Wednesday that Joshua Medcalf, 31, was sentenced on a charge of aggravated battery for a Christmas Day stabbing of another inmate at the Johnson County Jail.
On December 25, 2019, Medcalf was captured on video during the early morning hours in the common area of his cell block approaching fellow inmate Phillip Lasley from behind. Lasley was on a video call at the time.
Medcalf could reportedly be seen removing an object from his waistband and then repeatedly striking Lasley with it in the upper body and head area. Lasley was eventually able to get the object, later determined it to be a broken piece of a broom handle, away from Medcalf.
Medcalf received the maximum penalty of 16 years in prison along with any costs paid by the jail in connection with Lasley’s medical treatment being entered as a judgment against him.
