COLUMBUS, Ind. – Authorities at the Bartholomew County Jail (BCJ) say that out of a total of 211 inmates, 91 have recently tested positive for COVID-19. Four jail employees have also been infected.
Last weekend, Indiana State Health Strike teams visited BCJ to test all inmates and employees. Four inmates reportedly refused to be tested, but are still in quarantine. The jail is on lockdown until the end of February.
Staff is continuing to move cell blocks in an effort to keep safe those who tested negative. All who tested positive are quarantined. Medical staff continues to monitor all inmates and reportedly remains on call 24/7.
BCJ leadership is working closely with the Bartholomew County Health Department, the Indiana Sheriff’s Association, Columbus Regional Health, and other Sheriff’s Departments for safety guidance.
Since March 2020, sanitation inside the jail has been increased. Inmates are required to wear masks and everyone is screened prior to being booked into the jail. Employees are also screened, required to wear masks and PPE when entering cell blocks.
