COLUMBUS, Ind. – Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) Deputy JD Myers was stationary in his patrol vehicle on Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of 10th Street and Whitfield Drive when it was rear-ended.
The driver of the other involved vehicle, later identified as David Caldwell, 69, of Columbus, advised that his foot slipped off the brake, causing the collision. There were no injuries or damage to the vehicles involved as a result.
As the accident was being documented, the deputy allegedly observed Caldwell throw a baggie of suspected narcotics under his vehicle. When confronted, the suspect denied any knowledge of the baggie.
The contents of the baggie were later tested and showed presumptive positive for fentanyl. A pipe used to smoke suspected narcotics and a firearm were supposedly located on Caldwell’s person.
He was booked on the charges of possession of paraphernalia and possession of narcotics while in possession of a firearm, and remains in custody on a $15,000 bond.
This is a preliminary BCSO investigation. All persons are innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
