NEW ALBANY, Ind. — A Lawrence County man has been sentenced after pleading guilty to theft from a federally licensed firearms dealer. Calvin Levi Johnson, 20, of Bedford, faces 14 months in federal prison for the robbery, which occurred at the beginning of last year.
According to court documents, on January 11, 2022, at around 2 a.m., the Bedford Police Department responded to a burglary alarm at a local knife and gun shop.
Security cameras showed Johnson using a hammer to break a display case, remove 16 handguns, and put them in a backpack. A search warrant for his residence enabled law enforcement to confiscate all of the stolen firearms.
“Thefts from gun retailers help to arm criminals and drive violence in our communities,” said U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, Zachary Myers. “Prosecution of gun traffickers stems violent crime and is a top priority for federal law enforcement.”
The sentence, imposed by U.S. District Court Chief Judge Tanya Walton Pratt, also ordered Johnson to be supervised by the U.S. Probation Office for two years following his release from federal prison.
