COLUMBUS, Ind. — UPDATE: A Columbus woman is in custody after she crashed a stolen vehicle into a couple of utility poles after a pursuit.
The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) responded to the 8900 Block of N. County Road 1050E on a report of a stolen vehicle where the victim told law enforcement that a woman had stolen his 2007 Ford Focus. While responding to the call, Sgt. Andrew Whipker saw a car matching that description driving south on State Road 9 in the area of E, County Road 300N, according to BCSO spokesman Sgt. Dane Duke.
Whipker and Columbus Police Department officers tried to stop the vehicle in the area of E. 25th Street and Flintwood Drive, but the driver, Devony Thompson, 42, of Columbus, allegedly failed to stop, accelerated, and continued to head west on E. 25th Street, according to law enforcement.
The pursuit continued north on Home Avenue and then south onto National Road. At the intersection of National Road and Central Avenue, the driver traveled south in the northbound lanes of National Road and began to lose control of the vehicle. The car left the roadway on the east side of National Road and eventually struck two utility poles near Fazoli’s, where Thompson was arrested.
The suspect sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and was taken to Columbus Regional Health by EMS and later to an Indianapolis-area hospital due to the extent of her injuries. Authorities say she was not wearing a seatbelt during the incident. Thompson faces charges of auto theft, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, reckless driving, and driving while suspended prior.
