COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) apprehended a man on the Intelligence Led Police Unit’s most wanted list on Thursday night.
Deputies attempted to serve arrest warrants in Elkland Hills Trailer Park, near Newbern, at around 11:15 p.m. They received information that Daniel Michael, 31, of Columbus, who had eluded them previously, was there. The warrants were for dealing in methamphetamine, manufacturing meth, and possession of meth.
Law enforcement spoke with residents at the home who confirmed that Michael was inside, per BCSO Det. Dane Duke. The occupants tried unsuccessfully to coax Michael to voluntarily exit. The homeowner then gave deputies permission to enter and make the arrest. After Michael ignored verbal commands to leave his hiding place within the home, a police service dog was deployed. He subsequently surrendered and was taken into custody.
“This is the perfect outcome for the use of our law enforcement K9s, we encountered a hiding, uncooperative, wanted subject who presented an unknown danger to my deputies,” said Sheriff Chris Lane. “K9 Frizko’s presence alone appears to have motivated the individual to surrender peacefully which prevented possible injury to himself and officers.”
“We’d also like to thank the members of the community who reached out to the Sheriff’s Office which made this arrest possible,” said Spokesman Det. Dane Duke. “We value our relationship with the community and appreciate their assistance.”
