SEYMOUR, Ind. — The City of Seymour hosts Tuskegee Airmen Dedication Week next week as it celebrates the African-American military pilots who fought during World War II and contributed to the Civil Rights Movement.
A new Indiana State Historical Marker about the Freeman Field Mutiny and two life-size statues of Tuskegee Airmen will be dedicated during events that will last from October 4 thru October 8.
The Freeman Field Munity was a 1945 Seymour incident in which 162 arrests of black officers were made after members of the 477th Bombardment Group attempted to integrate an all-white officer’s club. Some officers were court-martialed, although the Air Force vindicated their actions in 1995.
The event is considered an important catalyst in the full integration of the military and the Civil Rights Movement. For more information and to visit a daily schedule of the events, go here.
