INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded to a domestic disturbance call at an Indianapolis eastside residence on Thursday at a little before 3 p.m. As officers approached the apartment and knocked on the door, shots were fired from inside that struck Officer Breann Leath. She was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition, where she later died of her injuries.
During the incident, another person was shot and was transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital in stable condition. IMPD apprehended the suspect, and he was taken into custody without further incident.
Officer Leath was a mother, a daughter of a public servant family, and also a veteran. She is the first IMPD officer to be killed in the line of duty since July 2014.
