COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 9-1-1 report of a single-vehicle accident in the 13000 block of South County Road 100W, on Monday at around 4:15 p.m.
The caller advised that they observed smoke in the area and went to investigate where it was coming from and found a car engulfed in flames. The vehicle appeared to have crashed into a tree near the roadway.
When deputies arrived, they were unable to see within the car or get close enough to enter it. They used three fire extinguishers in an attempt to extinguish the fire, however, they were unable to put it out.
The Southwest Bartholomew and Wayne Township Volunteer Fire Departments responded and extinguished the fire. One occupant was found deceased inside the vehicle.
The Accident Reconstruction Team conducted its investigation, which is ongoing.
The identity of the victim will be released later by the Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office.
