COLUMBUS, Ind. – Capt. Mike Wilson of the Columbus Fire Department (CFD) says crews responded to a vehicle fire in the parking lot of IUPUC, 4601 Central Ave., on Thursday afternoon. Firefighters received the call, just after 1:30 p.m., when a Best Way Disposal truck driver noticed smoke billowing from his trash compactor truck.
According to CFD, the quick-thinking truck operator pulled into the IUPUC parking lot, where he dumped the burning contents onto a vacant portion of the lot.
Firefighters from station # 2, located less than 100 yards from the scene, arrived to find a large trash pile with flames showing on all sides. Emergency crews quickly extinguished the blaze and then remained on the scene until all was deemed safe.
No injuries were reported in the incident. The debris was removed by Best Way Disposal.
